Fuel Polishing System from King Tanktechnic

Is this the best cure for constipation known
to Hazardous Waste handlers!

Ray and Steve King, directors and joint owners of King Tanktechnic Ltd of Droylsden, Manchester decided that in the spirit of doing a job from “A to Z” with their own men and equipment, they would work towards attaining an Environmental Licence to handle and dispose of the waste removed from sites during their tank cleaning, inspecting and lining operations.

In September 2005 they were awarded licence number EAWML/50443 having fulfilled the stringent requirements of the Environment Agency and United Utilities. Great! That is the upside but when you reach the plateau and become a member of the club, then you have to maintain that standard and abide by the rules.

This is ensured by the Environment Officers who periodically descend unannounced to check that you are still doing things correctly. Not a problem? I don’t care who you are and how well you think you are doing things, there must be an involuntary sphincter twitch when the man or woman wearing the E.A. Hi Viz and carrying the clipboard knocks on your door.

KTL are no different but fortunately over the years since 2005, E.A. unannounced inspections have been trouble free due in no small measure to Joe Colebourne the KTL Depot Supervisor who runs a very tight ship in respect of the Depot and in particular, the waste handling section of our operation.

On the 5th of March 2009 at 0900hrs, no less than ten Environment Agency High Viz jackets and ten clipboards presented themselves at KTLs’ gates!

Joe from King TanktechnicEven though we were pre warned on this occasion I must admit to a flutter of anticipation (A very long time since I had one of those!) and some trepidation about whether or not my side of the waste handling operation (The easy bit – the paperwork) was in order.

I needn’t have worried. Joe had it all in hand having agreed to a request some weeks earlier from Ian Hughes, an Environment Officer based at Appleton House in Warrington to bring some junior Colleagues to us for a training day.

To use Ian’s’ own words, “I would like to bring them here to use you as a Benchmark and show them how it should be done”

Fantastic! A compliment at last! You don’t get many of those in business ‘nowadays.
All nine people accompanying Ian were either inspectors already or in training to be inspectors.

I did my computer aided presentation for them whilst sweating slightly and feeling Joes needle sharp gaze between my shoulder blades. Woe betide any General Manager (Or Director for that matter!) who puts a foot wrong whilst talking about his depot.

Joe conducting a tour of king tankBreathing a sigh of relief, I left the E.A. to Joe’s tender mercy and as you can see from the pictures (Joe is the good looking one in the black hanging judge’s hat conducting operations) he gave them the full tour of the facility.

Fortunately for them, they were able to answer all Joe’s questions after the tour and as you can see from the other photograph, Joe (Far left) felt able to remove the hat and actually smile! (Not something he does unless everything is going very well!)

Ian Hughes offered his thanks and, quite honestly, it was good day for all as we got to show off a service and facility of which we are very proud, the E.A. people got to see how it should be done at the pointed end, but best of all Joe didn’t have to shout once!
